UNITED NATIONS, June 26 (Xinhua) -- President of the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Tijjani Muhammad-Bande has stressed the vital global importance of the UN Charter, calling it a "milestone" in human history.

In an interview with Xinhua two days prior to June 26, which marks the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the UN Charter, Muhammad-Bande said the document has been "key to the development of the ideas about human rights, development and peace," adding that it has been "to everybody's advantage."

Citing the Paris climate accord and the Sustainable Development Goals, which he said contain good examples of the right things to do by adhering to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, Muhammad-Bande added that only the United Nations can bring all countries and peoples together to do things of this sort.

Speaking of the historical contributions of the charter, the UNGA president said that the world body, first of all, has "some credit" in preventing the flames of another world war, simply "because there have been norms of conduct that all of us share" in the charter.

Noting that these norms of conduct "have contained our impulse to power," he said global security has been gradually enhanced because of adherence to the purposes and principles of the charter.

The UNGA president said that the UN Charter has helped with the development of human rights, which is one of the three pillars of the UN.

"The charter defines even the modern world," Muhammad-Bande noted.

Muhammad-Bande also highly commended the positive role of the charter in pushing forward such efforts as abolishing the apartheid system.

"The United Nations helped in bringing an end to the apartheid system that is incompatible with international law and incompatible with rule of justice," the UNGA president stressed.

However, he also pointed out that some states "are still suffering," adding that "we need to take our shortcomings and examine them."

Nevertheless, he said all should bear in mind "the big picture" of the contribution of the UN with the charter at its core when it comes to peace, security, development and human rights.

"The global community represented by the member states needs to celebrate what the organization means while it looks to the future," Muhammad-Bande said.

The UNGA president called on the global community to follow "the founding fathers and mothers" of the UN Charter and work harder to guarantee a multilateral rules-based order.
